8.6 Blackout 185gr Hornady CX - Premium Supersonic Hunting Ammunition
The Just Cause Solutions 8.6 Blackout 185gr Hornady CX ammo is one of our premium supersonic hunting loads, designed for extended range performance and maximum terminal effectiveness. Featuring Hornady's proven CX (Copper alloy eXpanding) monolithic bullet technology, this load delivers flat trajectory, deep penetration, and devastating expansion on medium to large game.
Even though this is not a SAAMI approved cartridge (yet) we still test to SAAMI standards.
We're the only 8.6 Blackout manufacturer that owns a SAAMI-spec conformal transducer for pressure testing. Every batch is verified for your safety and optimal performance.
Hornady CX Bullet Technology - Proven Performance
The Hornady CX bullet represents the evolution of their legendary GMX design. This monolithic copper alloy projectile features optimized geometry for maximum ballistic coefficient and controlled expansion. Key features include:
- One-piece copper alloy construction - Designed to not separate or fragment
- Heat Shield tip - Resists aerodynamic heating for consistent BC
- Optimized grooves - Reduce bearing surface and fouling
- 95%+ weight retention - Maintains mass through heavy bone and tissue
- Devastating expansion - Consistent mushrooming at supersonic velocities
This combination delivers deep, straight-line penetration with massive wound channels - ideal for ethical, one-shot kills on deer-sized game and larger.
Supersonic Advantage - Extended Range Capability
Unlike subsonic loads, this supersonic 185gr CX load offers several advantages for hunters:
- Flatter trajectory - Less holdover required at distance
- Higher retained energy - More kinetic energy on target
- Faster bullet flight time - Less lead needed on moving game
- Better wind resistance - .407 G1 BC performs well in wind
- Extended effective range - Suitable for longer shots than subsonic
Best Applications
Ideal For:
- Medium to large game (whitetail, mule deer, black bear, hogs)
- Open country hunting where distance matters
- Situations where subsonic range is limiting
- Hunters who prioritize flat trajectory and retained energy
- Precision rifle applications
Game Recommendations: Whitetail deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, black bear, wild hogs, exotic game (nilgai, axis deer)

Supersonic velocities deliver significantly higher energy than subsonic loads. Always verify your specific rifle's performance and practice at your intended hunting distances.
Platform Compatibility
Optimized For:
- Q Fix (bolt action)
- Faxon Sentinel (AR-10 platform)
- Custom bolt-action builds
- Taurus Expedition
Requirements:
- 1:3 or 1:5 twist barrel - This 185gr bullet stabilizes well in either twist rate
- Suppressor optional (will still produce sonic crack)
- Adjustable gas block helpful for semi-auto tuning
Why Choose Supersonic Over Subsonic?
Consider This Load If You:
- Hunt in open country where longer shots are common
- Prefer flatter trajectory for easier holdovers
- Want higher energy delivery on target
- Need better performance in windy conditions
- Don't require maximum suppressed stealth
Trade-offs to Consider:
- Produces sonic crack (even with suppressor)
- Slightly more recoil than heavier subsonic loads
- Louder suppressed than subsonic (but still reduces muzzle blast)
Twist Rate Considerations
The 8.6 Blackout was designed with a 1:3 twist rate by Q, LLC. However, most 8.6 Blackout bullets - including this 185gr Hornady CX - will stabilize effectively in either 1:3 or 1:5 twist barrels.
1:3 Twist: Optimized for the heaviest bullets (300gr+). Works excellent with all lighter bullets including this 185gr load.
1:5 Twist: Works well with most 8.6 Blackout bullets including supersonic offerings like this 185gr CX. Generally better for lighter weight projectiles (160-210gr range).
Note: Some very heavy subsonic bullets (such as the Maker 352gr and heavier) require 1:3 twist and may not stabilize properly in 1:5. Consult your specific bullet manufacturer's recommendations.
Comparison: 185gr CX vs 350gr Subsonic
| Feature | 185gr CX Supersonic | 350gr Subsonic |
| Muzzle Velocity (16") | 2150 fps | 1040 fps |
| Muzzle Energy | ~1,895 ft-lbs | ~840 ft-lbs |
| Trajectory | Flat | Arcing |
| Suppressed Noise | Moderate (sonic crack present) | Very quiet |
| Twist Rate | 1:3 or 1:5 | 1:3 required |
| Best For | Open country, extended range | Close range, maximum stealth |
Important Safety Notes
- Twist Rate: This 185gr bullet works well in both 1:3 and 1:5 twist barrels. Verify your barrel twist before purchasing.
- Suppressor Consideration: While this load can be suppressed, you will still hear the sonic crack. Suppressor primarily reduces muzzle blast.
- Not for .308 Wincheste or 6.5CM: Despite case similarity, NEVER fire 8.6 Blackout in .308 Win or 6.5CM chambers.
- Eye & Ear Protection: Always use proper hearing protection even when suppressed with supersonic loads.
- Know Your Limits: Practice at your intended hunting distances. Understand your rifle's performance and your own shooting capabilities before hunting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will this work in my suppressor?
A: Yes, as long as your suppressor is rated for .338 caliber. However, you will still hear the sonic crack from the bullet breaking the sound barrier.
Q: Do I need a 1:3 twist barrel for this?
A: No. This 185gr bullet works well in both 1:3 and 1:5 twist barrels. However, very heavy bullets (Maker 352gr and heavier) require 1:3 twist specifically.
Q: How does this compare to 300 Blackout supersonic?
A: The 185gr 8.6 Blackout delivers significantly more energy and better long-range performance due to the heavier, higher-BC bullet in the larger .338 diameter.
Q: Can I use this for target shooting?
A: Absolutely. The flat trajectory makes this excellent for precision shooting and long-range target work.
